Archibald Johnson Rose (1830-1903) was a soldier, educator, politician, and organizer of the Texas State Grange. After panning for gold in California, Rose moved to Texas in 1857 and settled on the San Saba River in 1860, where he ranched and helped establish a settlement. During the Civil War, Rose served in a Frontier unit protecting Texas from Indians. Rose moved to Salado after the end of the Civil War. John W. Moore (1833-1906), historian, author, lawyer, and Confederate officer was born at Mulberry Grove Plantation, Hertford County, N.C. An 1853 graduate of the University of North Carolina, he married Ann James Ward and practiced law in Murfreesboro, N.C. During the Civil War, Moore served with the 2d Regiment of North Carolina Cavalry and later commanded the 3d North Carolina Battalion. Walker Austin (1803-1881), realtor, financier, and proprietor, and his wife Euphemia McKinney moved from Missouri to Texas in 1857, along with his daughter, Sallie Ann, and her husband, Archibald J. Rose, known for his efforts with the Texas State Grange.
